Agatha Aboe, M.D., Ghana Country Representative
Dr. Agatha Aboe has been ITI’s Ghana Country Representative for over six years. She manages all ITI activities within Ghana and plays a key leadership role in Ghana’s effort to eliminate blinding trachoma from Ghana. She also worked with the Ministry of Health/Ghana Health Service, other partners and key ITI colleagues to develop a national five-year plan to prevent, treat and eliminate trachoma within Ghana by 2010. Dr. Aboe oversees the supply and efficient administration of Zithromax and, as a result, Ghana reached 99.5% of its 2007 Zithromax treatment target, with over 900,000 people treated.  Beginning in 2008, 19 out of Ghana’s 26 endemic districts have been graduated from antibiotic treatment.  Ghana is one of four countries in which ITI works that are on track to eliminate blinding trachoma by 2010.  Dr. Aboe played a leading role in the development and implementation of the Ghana National Plan for the USAID-supported Neglected Tropical Diseases Control Program. Under her exceptional leadership, this program was able to achieve its first year’s ambitious target of administering over 8 million treatments of Zithromax.

Before joining ITI, Dr. Aboe was Head of the Eye Department at the Tema General Hospital for six years, providing outpatient and inpatient care as well as organizing community eye work, which included eye screenings for school children, workers, drivers and market women. She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Ophthalmology from the West African Postgraduate Medical College, has a fellowship in International Health for Community Based Medical Education from University of Louisville, School of Medicine, Department of Family Practice and received her medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School.
