Bios

Nguyen Phuong Mai, M.D., Vietnam Country Representative
Dr. Nguyen Phuong Mai plays a leading role in Vietnam’s plans to eliminate trachoma by 2010. She works closely with the Ministry of Health as well as national and international institutes to assess research and implement effective programming to support the WHO-endorsed SAFE strategy for trachoma control.  Dr. Nguyen Phuong also ensures efficient administration of Pfizer-donated Zithromax within the country.  Her leadership and advocacy to eliminate trachoma has helped Vietnam reduce the number of communes in which trachoma is endemic from 1,980 communes in 2000 to only 200 communes in 2007—a 90% reduction in seven years. 

Before joining ITI, Dr. Nguyen Phuong spent six years with Pfizer as a brand representative and later a regulatory affairs manager within Vietnam.  She managed the importation, registration, research, advertising and overall operations of Pfizer within the country.  Dr. Nguyen Phuong holds a Master of Public Health from Columbia University, New York City, a Bachelors of Economics from Hanoi National University and became a general practitioner at Moscow Medical Institute. She is fluent in English, Russian and Vietnamese.
