Edith Martha Ngirwamungu, M.D, Tanzania Country Representative
Edith Martha Ngirwamungu joined ITI as Program Manager for Tanzania before undertaking her current role as Country Representative. In her seven years with ITI, Dr. Ngirwamungu has built alliances between districts, NGOs, ministries and other partners, and is a fervent advocate in the fight against trachoma.  She facilitates the implementation of the National Trachoma Control Program involving national, regional and district coordinators.  She also facilitates research and provides technical support to the 50 trachoma endemic districts in Tanzania. Since ITI’s work started in Tanzania in 1999, awareness of trachoma as a treatable disease increased from a localized problem in central Tanzania to countrywide due to advocacy efforts. The burden of blinding trachoma was established in 18 regions of Tanzania mainland.  In addition, a total of 20,670 patients have received trachomatous trichiasis surgeries and more than 16 million people have been treated with Pfizer-donated Zithromax.

Dr. Ngirwamungu was formerly the Deputy Program Manager for the National Reproductive Health Program for the Tanzanian Ministry of Health.  She has been a medical officer in the Emergency Medicine Department at the Muhimbili National Hospital where she received the 1992 Best Work award.  Dr. Ngirwamungu holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Dar es Salaam and a Master of Public Health from the University of Leeds, UK.  She is fluent in English and Kiswahili.
