Mr. Samna Mohamed, Niger Country Representative
Samna Mohamed has led ITI activities in Niger for the past seven years, working with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and local colleagues to develop and implement the country’s five-year plan to eliminate trachoma.  He has advocated for and seen the MOH increase its budget allocation for trachoma control program with a 20 million CA francs donation for Zithromax treatment.  Mr. Mohamed is ITI’s representative on the Neglected Tropical Disease program in Niger, which has helped over 5.6 million people receive Zithromax.  In 2007 alone, an expansion of the NTD-control program allowed an additional 50% of the population to be treated for trachoma.  If this expansion continues with adequate resources, all trachoma endemic regions in Niger would be covered with Zithromax treatment by 2009.

Prior to joining ITI in October 2001, Mr. Mohamed worked with Helen Keller International (HKI) for over eight years as the Regional Training Manager in the field of Trachoma, Onchocerciasis and Vitamin A deficiency. He was responsible for social mobilization and developing, implementing and documenting IEC trainings and health education strategies and interventions for all HKI Regional programs in Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cote d’Ivoire. Other activities included designing health education learning activities and sessions through a participative approach, planning overall curriculum, establishing and preparing training teams, and monitoring and supervising the quality of training and sensitization sessions in the three projects mentioned above. Mr. Mohamed worked with the Ministry of Education of Niger as an English Teacher and Teacher Advisor for 11 years.  He received his MA degree from Warwick University, Coventry, UK, in 1992.
