Bios

Adam Zayan, M.D., Chief Program Officer
Adam Zayan is responsible for overall planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating ITI’s trachoma elimination program.  Since joining the organization in 2007, Dr. Zayan has worked in a number of countries, including Mali and Ethiopia to strengthen and expand the SAFE strategy and expand ITI’s programs to include controlling other neglected tropical diseases.  As a leader of ITI’s global program, Dr. Zayan has played a significant role in establishing partnerships and alliances with Ministries of Health, the WHO, and many local organizations.  He also guides ITI staff to provide technical guidance on program development and implementation and measuring progress towards achieving the WHO goal of eliminating blinding trachoma by the year 2020.  Dr. Zayan works closely with ITI’s Board, President and Trachoma Expert Committee to expand ITI programs into other trachoma endemic countries. 

Prior to working at ITI, Dr. Zayan was President and CEO of The IRIS Network, a national blindness rehabilitation organization, where he spearheaded a five-year program to double the organization’s size and expand its reach throughout the State of Maine.  He also served as Senior Vice President, Programs and Medical Director for eight years at ORBIS International where he oversaw its blindness prevention program.  Dr. Zayan managed health and population programs throughout the world in his other prominent positions of Executive Director for Partners in Population Development, Director of Primary Health Care for Save the Children, and Niger Country Office Director at Helen Keller International.  Dr. Zayan received a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Alexandria Medical School in Egypt and a Masters of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. He is fluent in English, French, and Arabic.
